わが国は、今や世界一の長寿国となりましたが、同時に成人病も激増いたしました。元来成人病と老化とは切り離すことができないもので、老化を防止し、「健康で長生き」ができるためには、まず成人病の予防と治療が重要であります。
われわれは、実験的ならびに臨床的観察によって、成人病の直接原因が体内に増加した過酸化脂質によることを提唱し、国際シンポジウムを開催するなどして老化と成人病の予防に努めているところであります。
一方、最近の医療の問題の中で最も重要なものの一つは、遺伝性疾患でありますが、これは遺伝子の欠陥が原因で酵素の欠陥などを来すものであります。従って、遺伝子の補完、酵素の補充等によって予防と治療が可能となると考えられます。
ひるがえって、老化についてみますと、過酸化脂質がその重要な原因の一つであるという考えに基づけば、その増加を抑制したり消去したりするものに役立つ酵素の問題が重要となりますが、この点に関して言えば、現在の人間は、遺伝性化学的にみて不完全なものといわねばなりません。即ち、より健康で長生きのできる人間を想定すれば、現在の人間は酵素欠陥症であるか、あるいは遺伝性疾患をもつものであると極限できます。従って、老化防止の問題を遺伝性疾患の予防、治療と全く同じベースにたって考えねばなりません。これらの医療上の重要課題を関連させながら解決しようとするのが、この研究所を設立した目的であります。
われわれは、より健康なより長命な人間の社会、不幸な遺伝病のない社会を目指して、研究活動を活発に推進し、社会に貢献したいと念願しております。
一般財団法人応用生化学研究所は2013年4月に公益財団に移行しました。

Japan has now become the world's longest-lived country, but at the same time, adult diseases have also increased dramatically. Originally, adult diseases and aging cannot be separated, and in order to prevent aging and achieve "healthy longevity," prevention and treatment of adult diseases are important.
We have proposed through experimental and clinical observations that the direct cause of adult diseases is increased lipid peroxides in the body, and we are working to prevent aging and adult diseases by holding international symposia.
On the other hand, one of the most important issues in recent medicine is hereditary diseases, which are caused by genetic defects leading to enzyme defects. Therefore, prevention and treatment are considered possible through genetic complementation, enzyme supplementation, etc.
Looking at aging, based on the idea that lipid peroxides are one of the important causes, the issue of enzymes that help suppress or eliminate their increase becomes important. In this regard, it must be said that current humans are incomplete from a genetic biochemical perspective. That is, if we assume humans who can live healthier and longer lives, current humans can be said to have enzyme deficiency or hereditary diseases. Therefore, the problem of preventing aging must be considered on the same basis as the prevention and treatment of hereditary diseases. The purpose of establishing this research institute is to solve these important medical issues while relating them to each other.
We hope to actively promote research activities and contribute to society, aiming for a society of healthier and longer-lived humans, and a society without unfortunate genetic diseases.
The Applied Biochemistry Research Institute Foundation transitioned to a public interest foundation in April 2013.
